Located
on a steeply sloping site in Louisville, Tennessee, this small
house for a single person is organized around its relationship
to the Tennessee River. One enters the house through a covered
vestibule with splayed walls that focus views towards the
water. Glass doors parallel to the entry draw the eye
through the foyer to the observation deck overlooking the
river. The kitchen, living and dining space share the same
volume, but are defined by floor levels and a study loft above
the kitchen. These spaces are visually connected to the water
by a large window wall on the east facade. During the spring
and summer months, the sun reflects off the water and filters
through the trees, washing the space with a dappled,
flickering light. Small, punched openings on the west
elevation provide a degree of privacy from the adjacent road
and allow late afternoon light to penetrate across the space.
