The
addition to the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist church is
composed of three distinct elements: an entry house, a
processional hall, and a 200-seat sanctuary. The design
goals were based on a set of architectural principles
consistent with Unitarian Universalist traditions. These
include respect for the environment, use of the building as a
teaching tool, and creation of a sense of place that welcomes
the larger community. The design, composed of modest
materials, relies on its form and details to express the ideas
and ideals of the church. The building symbolizes the
interdependence of man and nature by embracing the presence of
the landscape and natural light.
